assignment 2

Design Audit

This design brief is very important and brings up some important decisions. With wether to use the name Ublo or your real name is a hard decision but I would have to go with your name Rohan Nicol, reasons being it gives you a more personal and approachable feel letting your client see that they will be getting a real person, also your real name will be easier to distinguish than a short alias that could be mistaken as a company name and your name is simple and clean in it’s pronunciation as is your work in it’s clean sleek style but last and not least your are wanting to creat a new identity for this line so a new name just seems to fit, it will still be the same designer just a new part of you, a new name for a new work. When going about the logo I will research other simple, stylish logos, ones that have minimal decoration and also gather ideas from your own work so that I may attempt to portray you and your craftsmanship unique style but still keeping in mind that they are to be one colour or a logo that can also be presented in one colour and able to be embossed along with the ability to be made into a risen mould if you feel you would like. Your work shows a sleek industrial design but is really craftsmanship and I would really like to be able to show that in the logo so I will be portraying your smooth style the way your light gives off that feel. As for the scaffolding for your box I plan to show your clients how you work, a simple and easy design showing off your nature with your name and logo with a few examples of your work but the examples would not be over powering the simplicity of the design, they would just be there as a preview of your work. The way you present you finished designs gives me the idea of white background with your name and logo slightly off centre and a third of the way down the background and a few of you finished works and there process off the right hands side over lapping, zigzagged down the page but I still need to gather more ideas on the design and look at other works also three tan comfortable chairs with a coffee table similar shaped to your light.

Timetable

Week One may 5- This week I will devote to research on the logos and your design

booth which will allow me time to visit libraries and other useful

Industrial Design

Ray Parslow

This work is Promoting the Sydney Festival 2001 Program. It looks very simplistic and very vibrant in it’s colour.

Alson Page

The colours are flat but work well together also giving it shade and light but also again simplistic.

Angelo Kotsis

The showershave this is not exactly what I had in mind but it is still sleek.

This is a group of designers called

Dinosaur Designs

There design reminds me of ublo’s style simple and thinking outside the box.

Toby Grime

CD Cover art. The colours and use of circles give this a real vibrant feel.

Duann Scott

This design is natural and aesthetically appealing and very simple in it’s design.

House Products

Mac Products show sleek and simple style.

Also they compare them self’s in a relaxed manner to other computer companies. Eg in the pic the 2 people show the nerdy business man as the PC and the young relaxed guy as the mac.

Optus Mobil Phones “Bring your mobile to life!”

There very care free nature with their advertising and the colours and sleek phones gives off a friendly feel to try and get across to the client.

Converse

I’m not really sure about it’s quote but it has set up a great image for it’s self being like the cool kid at school that every ones wants to be like, they give off that care free vibe.

Garnier “Take care”

“No one makes your hair stronger”

The way Garnier portrays it’s self is the whole “use this or your hairs will be S#@T” sort of vibe trying to show there is no one else but them and also connecting to the younger audience with the bright vibrant colours.

Fender

“Stop dreaming, start playing”

Fender has a sense of distinguish to it, being a classic it brings out special editions all the time making them seem as though you are luck if you have a fender you made the right choice.

Brother

“at your side”

The name says it all, the easy relaxed colour and the name saying we are family you can rely on us. And the rounded text just lets it flow.

these logos are very feminine in there presentation. each at least have a bit of pink in them which is supposed to be the color for girls. The Barbie logo is very girly the way it's set out and it's also great text for children. With the Porcelain logo it's trying to be formal with the text using a large letter and stylizing it like in medieval time. Then with the cabbage Patch Kids it is extremely child like and innocent with the baby face in the cabbage as their logo.

Week five Readings

This reading was about all about text and how important it is with in design mainly with the positioning. the simplest things can mean the most, just the way a bit of space between the letters can just make the whole design around it work. i found this helped in this weeks work shop. like indenting text and the position just brings every thing together. Text isn't one of the most important thing's it's equally important as the rest and need as much thought as an image or logo. It's position, size, font and color all play a major part in the finished product to inform and portray information that is unable to be displayed with in the image or logo.

The three Jewellery Shop logo are very similar in the way they are presented. None of them have a symbol as a logo it's just their type. Each in a formal style text they are all very eloquent in their presentation.

Week Four Readings

david Airey's explanation for how to write a design brief was great, it explained to great extent how to work with the client and how important a design brief is. it really helps with setting out, and showing what you want to achieve and how much you are worth so if the client doesn't want you he can tell you at the start before the work is done. i will defiantly be looking back at this site for future reference upon my career. This weeks class was about a jewellery shop and creating letter heads with their logo and well as ads and I thought about what Ariey said and  knowing about the company and doing research would help to design the logo and give the client what they really wanted.

Target are a great component for myer. It mainly their reputation that makes them such competitor to myer and their target market has a lot more range then myer. The logo it's self has a great idea but it's not as formal as what myer is.

The Bonds logo designed in black and white is just as affective as the myer logo since they can both work well in black and white ad's. The plain simple text makes it easy to recognize but like the myer logo bonds mainly attract the younger audience.

Nike another logo in black and white is very  similar to myer and bonds. the simple logo has one up on the other's though because the logo type is not it's logo. on the other hand the it's similar in the fact that  it only advertises to a certain audience.

Week Three Readings

Week three's reading where cool. the design for the children's museum they came up with was great. it helped with the setting out of my design for myer at least in my head lol, although i think my design is a little to 'tweaked' for the company i think it would attracted the younger clients. but i enjoyed this weeks reading because in the first part with the museum their images look like a lot of fun and also when u put them in order they're climbing lol. The colors they used with their design complement the image and they sute the products they go on also it would be really easy to create an add with. The second design for the entertainment centre Metreon i thought the final design was the best, it look's formal but inviting, the other designs for it just seemed to reject shop for me compared the the final project. some of the others look like they are for a tv station. i like the way the final one is presented it unusual but works well.

Week 2 logos

The fire fox image is made up of pretty simple parts. The name fire fox is shown in the logo by the fox curled around the world and it's tail made into a sort of fire shape. it's clever and simple in it's function.

As for the dell logo it is even simpler in it's shape. the only thing that keep's this image original is the E , the colors representing the company as serious and competent.

The voles wagon logo has incorporated the v and the w into their logo to make the logo easily recognized and the use of negative space simple in it's form but affective.

Week Two Readings

The first reading about logos and what they are give a really good explanation along with how they work together with logo type. i think that i mostly designed to get a feel for the company as it says on the first website, the way the logo and the logo type is the companies trade mark.

The second web site on corporate identity really explains how we need to be unique and how important it is for the client, it goes on about how much client's pay to be unique, that's why in some of my logo's i altered the text just a little bit using outlines so that if my client had of use the logo other people could not steal it easily.

As for the third web site tells us all about what exactly a brand is. It's like the next step after the logo and it's type have been designed.

The Brisbane broncos crest uses th
e head of a bronco to show the horses strength of t
he team,as
 well as their speed. th
e maroon background represents their origin being the color for queensland, the yellow meaning strength and loyalty with the blue showing their honor.

Peugeot uses a lion as their crest, a very common symbol in most crests to show courage, strength and the top of the food chain. The lion being used as their logo is a great way of showing that they are the king of the car's in their performance.
As for the air force crest the eagle shows their nobleness, the color's blue and yellow having the same meaning as the broncos crest.

Week One

The crest is ok. it's better than some crest's. the blue and white really complement each other in this crest. the imagery used in the crest (the knight's helmet and the lining of gold) give the image a royal sense, as to the tassels at the bottom. i personally think that this crest is  complementary to my family name.

Mossimo is a clothing company for youth, the logo is designed for the younger age group. The text it's self is it's logo. The graffiti style text makes it a little difficult to read but easy to recognize plus the under wear is really comfortable "it feel's like ur wearing nothing at all, nothing at all, nothing at all." "stupid sexy flanders" lol
As for the Mambo logo(which is also a clothing company as well as much more) it changes all the time and there is no one set logo but it still has a great impact because of it's reputation. this logo in my opinion is not their best but it's still pretty kool. It's sort of sixties design with the colors but still modern.
